Akshaya Patra Foundation

India Carbon Limited has recently forged a relationship with The Akshaya Patra Foundation, which evolved the strategic school meal program in schools. This project initiated as a pilot project in five schools in Bangalore, feeding 1,500 children steadily, has now grown into a mammoth endeavor covering over a million children in 5700 government / government aided schools and “Anganwadis” (day care centers) in seventeen locations spread over seven states in India, day after day. Akshaya Patra, is a secular, not-for-profit program implemented only in Government schools where there is no discrimination on the basis of religion, gender, color or socio economic background. The organization’s motto stands “unlimited food for education”.
   
Flood Relief & Tsunami  
The ICL family played an active role in the Flood Relief Programs in the flood-affected areas of Madhepura, Bihar by co-coordinating its efforts with Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission. 

In December 2004, a major earthquake followed by a Tsunami hit Asia and Africa, devastating many coastal areas. Again, the officials and employees of India Carbon Limited participated in large numbers with the region’s government. We were able to respond immediately, providing life-saving food, water, medical care and shelter. 
   
Tribal Welfare  
During the year, India Carbon Limited and its network of social service trust and foundations has undertaken manifold periphery development and welfare schemes for Tribal people with Santhal Paharia Seva Mandal (SPSM). ICL lends is support to peripheral schools and colleges associated with SPSM and also extends aid in the form of arranging study materials, providing furniture, etc.
   
BENEFIT OF SURROUNDING AREA MED CAMP  

Apart from the above the company has taken various steps in order to protect and improve the ambient environment and aesthetics of the area surrounding its manufacturing plants. Some of the steps taken by the company are under noted below:-

  • Afforestation : About 3,000 saplings were planted during the current year.
  • Conservation of Water
  • Minimization of waste
  • Installation of some of the highest cost environment protection system above and beyond those adopted as a standard industry practice.
   
THE MISSION  

Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission (RKVM) was established as a registered society on 25th October 1976 at the initiative of a band of young sannyasis and brahmacharis dedicated to serve suffering humanity irrespective of caste, creed, sex or religion. India Carbon Limited (ICL) is also very deeply involved with Ramakrishna Vivekananda Mission

RKVM began work on 1st January 1977 by opening its first Welfare Home at Barrackpore with 20 desperately poor tribal children as free inmates. 

Today, RKVM’s activities include 19 Welfare Homes with over 1,000 inmates, 30 schools with nearly 8,000 students, 4 Charitable Dispensaries, 2 Hospitals, 5 Old Age Homes and 6 Vocational Training-cum-Production Centres spread over several States in India 

   
THE SURYAPORE CENTRE  
The Suryapur Centre of RKVM started in 1993 as a Welfare Home for hearing, speech impaired (HI) and vision impaired (VI) girls. The centre caters to orphans, abandoned, neglected girls or girls from Below Poverty Line background. The aim is to love, nurture, education and give vocational skills to these “differently abled” children. 

These children are not only looked after with tender love and care, they attend school to gain literacy and learn to be self-reliant by acquiring hands-on skills at the Vocational Training-cum-Production Centre that is now part of the Suryapur Centre.
   
The centre provides computer literacy to all children from Grade I level.  Senior Girls are tutored to take State Level Examination in Computer Application.  Some of the girls are being developed to handle multi-media work, some in Desk Top Printing and production of Braille books.
1.  Programme for Special Educators 
Two year diploma courses for Special Educators are conducted to train graduates and under-graduates from outside to become Special Educators (teachers for HI & VI).  The curriculum is as prescribed by the Rehabilitation Council of India and the examinations are conducted by Manipal University
 
2.  State Resource Centre on Visual Disability
The Department of Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal has accorded the Centre the status of a State Resource Centre on Visual Disability in recognition of its signal services to the visually challenged. This is part of India’s National Programme for Rehabilitation of Persons with Disability.
 
3.  Primary – level Training Centre on Visual Impairment
At the national level, too, the Rehabilitation Council of India has recognized the Centre as a Primary – level Training Centre on Visual Impairment. 
 
4. Vocation Training for Rehabilitation of Handicapped Girls.
    a) IT related – It is a major focus at the Suryapur Centre, which includes Multimedia, DTP,  Braille book production etc. 
    b) Footwear Production 
    c) Book Binding & Stitching 
    d) Chalk pencil for Black Board 
    e) Tailoring 
    f) Mushroom production  
    g) Sericulture 
    h) Poultry 
    i) Vegetable garden 
    j)  Medical Services for poor rural folk 
    Suryapur Centre is focused on two aspects – care, education and overall development of handicapped girls, and secondly – produce best Special Educators to meet the unfulfilled gap in availability of special educators and we at India Carbon Limited are with them all the way in helping them reach their goals. 
   
New Light School  

Another such initiative undertaken newly was when we worked in coordination with Confederation of Indian Industries Young Indians and provided educational supplies, provisions, etc. to the children of the New Light School, Kolkata. New Light School is an organization that has been founded for the education and development of Children of Sex workers in the Kalighat area of Kolkata. ICL provides such support to these noble institutions with the aim of strengthening the base of these worthy groups and economy that not only they are able to carry on and continue the good work that they are doing but also such that they can grow and serve mankind on a larger scale.
